Quilting retreats literally are my therapy! I began hosting retreats 6 years ago, when after losing my husband to cancer, I found myself suddenly on my own, rattling around in a big 4 bedroom townhouse wondering how in the world I could cope with this new reality. I knew I had to do things differently in order to heal so I focused only on things that brought me joy and said no to everything else. My husband and I had always loved to entertain family and friends in our home and I loved to cook - so I paired those things with my long time obsession with quilting and I started Sew Fabulous Creative Retreats. I began hosting small groups of 4 quilters for intimate retreats in my home - B&B style. At first it was mostly my close friends who came - thank goodness for their unwavering support! Eventually word spread and many others came too. It was a wonderful way to fill a huge hole in my life, fill my big home with people and laughter, make scrumptious meals …and quilt! The best part of course was spending time with my friends and really connecting with many amazingly creative quilting women!
Fast forward 3 years and it was time to move on from the big house - but what about my therapy, aka Retreats?! After moving it didn’t take too long before I started up Sew Fabulous Retreats again, this time in other venues, where I could host even larger groups. I started out hosting at Charis Camp just outside of Chilliwack - a lovely venue for retreats of 16-18 people. However I soon outgrew that space! WOW who knew there were SO many quilters out there looking for a retreat get-a-way?? I have adopted the line from the movie Field of Dreams - “If I build it they will come!” My last three retreats had over 30 people - the creative energy and inspiration in that room is off the charts! And my next retreat in February is sold out with 38 awesome ladies joining me!
My newest venue is at the Coast Hotel in Chilliwack. It has a fabulous huge sewing room and who doesn't love a little luxury sleeping in a fancy hotel room with maid service every day?! Plus there are all the Hotel amenities to enjoy, like the pool / hot tub, and cocktail lounge with live music - hooray!! And there is some great shopping nearby too - clothing/shoes/gifts/home decor - and a Starbucks and liquor store right across the street!
My retreats are “unstructured” - no classes, no workshops, no stress! Work on your own projects at your own pace. Do a much or as little as you like. It’s time to relax, have fun, connect and create. Laughing, learning, and being inspired is guaranteed!
MY QUILTING OBSESSION
My quilting obsession began over 20 years ago. I love trying new techniques … or more truthfully never seem to stick to one thing! I’ve experimented with traditional, appliqué, mola, paper piecing - I’m addicted!, curves, improv, bag making, collage, quilt as you go, etc! Right now I’m really loving modern quilting and am thinking about investing in the EQ program to learn how to design my own patterns. I think I am also a bit obsessed with quilt guilds - I used to belong to 5 but now only 3! - The Fraser Valley Modern Quilt Guild and the Chilliwack and PieceMakers Quilt Guilds.
Here are some of my favourite quilts and also some fun photos at retreats!
